Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 15, 2026

GuidingCents is a free guide site. We don’t sell anything, we don’t run user accounts, and we collect as little information as we can while still being able to answer your question.

This policy covers what we collect, why, and what you can do about it. It applies to guidingcents.com and to messages you send us through the site. If anything here is unclear, write to us at info@guidingcents.com and ask.

Information You Give Us

Everything in this section is information you type in yourself. We don’t collect any of it unless you choose to contact us or subscribe.

When you send a message through our contact form, we receive:

  • Your name
  • Your email address
  • The type of message you selected
  • Your device and Windows version, if you provide them
  • Your description of the problem
  • What you’ve already tried, if you tell us
  • Any screenshot you attach

When you subscribe to the newsletter, we receive your email address and nothing else.

We ask for device and Windows details because we can’t diagnose a problem without them. Everything on the form apart from name, email, message type, and the problem description is optional.

A Note About Screenshots

Screenshots often contain more than the person sending them realises. A window capture can include file names, folder paths, browser tabs, email addresses, calendar entries, or whatever else is visible on screen.

Before you attach one, take a moment to look at what’s in it. Crop it to the error message if you can, and close anything private first. We only need the part that shows the problem.

We store attached screenshots only as long as we need them to answer your question, and we delete them along with the rest of the message. We never publish a reader’s screenshot.

Information Collected Automatically

Server logs. Our web host records standard information for every visit: IP address, browser type, referring page, and the date and time. This is normal for all web hosting and is used for security and to keep the site running. We don’t use it to identify individuals.

Cookies. [DELETE OR EDIT THIS BLOCK TO MATCH YOUR ACTUAL SETUP. If you run no analytics and no ads, say so — it’s a genuine advantage and worth stating plainly.]

We use only the cookies WordPress needs to operate the site. We don’t run advertising cookies or tracking pixels.

Analytics. [If you use a tool, name it here and link its policy. If you use none, delete this section rather than leaving a vague placeholder.]

How We Use What You Send

We use your information to:

  • Answer your question
  • Reply to follow-up messages in the same thread
  • Send the newsletter, if you asked for it
  • Keep the site secure and working

That’s the complete list. We don’t build profiles, we don’t run targeted advertising, and we don’t do anything with your message other than respond to it.

When a Question Becomes a Guide

This is the one thing about our site worth reading carefully, because it’s unusual.

Questions that come up repeatedly get turned into full guides. When that happens:

  • We never publish your name, email address, or any detail that could identify you.
  • We never publish your screenshots. We recreate the problem on our own machine and take fresh ones.
  • We write about the problem, not about you. “Outlook throws error 0x800CCC0E after a password change” — not “a reader in Ohio wrote in about…”

If you’d rather your question wasn’t used this way at all, say so in your message and we’ll respect it. No explanation needed.

What We Never Do

We never sell, rent, or trade your information. Not to advertisers, not to data brokers, not to anyone.

We never share your message with third parties, except where the law requires it.

We never ask for passwords, licence keys, or payment details. If any message claiming to be from GuidingCents asks for these, it isn’t from us.

We never request remote access to your computer. We send written instructions; you run them yourself.

Services We Rely On

Running a website means some data passes through other companies. Ours are:

  • [HOSTING PROVIDER] — hosts the site and processes server logs
  • [EMAIL PROVIDER] — delivers and stores messages sent through the form
  • [NEWSLETTER PROVIDER] — stores subscriber email addresses, if you subscribe
  • [SPAM PROTECTION — e.g. Cloudflare Turnstile] — checks that form submissions come from a person, not a bot

[Fill these in with your actual providers and link to each one’s privacy policy. If you don’t know what you’re using, check your WordPress plugins before publishing — an inaccurate list is worse than no list.]

How Long We Keep Things

Messages and screenshots: kept while we’re working on your question, then deleted. If a message leads to a guide, we delete the original once the guide is written.

Newsletter subscriptions: kept until you unsubscribe. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and it works immediately.

Server logs: kept for whatever period our host retains them, typically a few weeks.

Your Rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to:

  • Tell you what we hold about you
  • Correct anything that’s wrong
  • Delete everything we have
  • Stop emailing you, at any time

Email info@guidingcents.com and we’ll action it. We’ll reply within one month, usually much sooner. We won’t charge you and we won’t ask why.

If you’re in the EU or UK, the GDPR also gives you the right to restrict or object to processing, the right to data portability, and the right to complain to your national data protection authority. Our legal basis for handling your message is legitimate interest — you asked us a question and we’re answering it. For the newsletter, it’s your consent, which you can withdraw whenever you like.

If you’re in California, the CCPA gives you the right to know what personal information we collect, to have it deleted, and to opt out of its sale. We don’t sell personal information and never have, so there’s nothing to opt out of — but the right to know and to delete apply, and the email above is how to use them.

Children

GuidingCents isn’t aimed at children and we don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, email us and we’ll delete it.

Changes to This Policy

If we change how we handle information, we’ll update this page and change the date at the top. Substantial changes will be noted at the top of the page for a while so returning visitors can see them.
